Mobile Notary 101: How a Notary Can Come to You

Cannot get to an office? A mobile notary travels to your home, office, or hospital room. Here is how it works and what to have ready.

Most people picture a notary as someone you have to drive across town to visit during business hours. A mobile notary flips that around. Instead of you going to the notary, the notary comes to you.

That convenience matters more than you might think. A mobile notary can meet you at your home, your office, a coffee shop, a hospital room, or an assisted living facility. They are a lifesaver for real estate closings, for family members who cannot easily travel, and for anyone who needs something signed after normal office hours.

Here is what to have ready before the appointment. First, bring the document, but do not sign it yet. A notary needs to watch you sign in person, so signing ahead of time means starting over. Second, have a valid government photo ID, such as a driver license or passport. Third, check whether your document needs witnesses, and if so, line them up in advance.

The notary’s job is to confirm you are who you say you are, that you are signing willingly, and that you understand you are signing. They are not there to give legal advice or tell you what the document means, so if you have questions about the content itself, talk to an attorney first.

Once everything checks out, the notary signs, stamps, and you are done. Quick, simple, and right at your kitchen table.
